5 Questions with Fredrick A. Wierschke

As an administrative testing assistant in 91大神鈥檚 Accessibility and Disability Resources, Fredrick A. Wierschke helps students navigate one of the most important parts of their academic experience: taking exams. Since joining the College in January 2026, Wierschke has helped administer exams, run reports, and keep databases up to date 鈥 but what he values most is the opportunity to make students feel supported. Outside of 91大神, he is a history buff, chess player, church deacon, and avid reader who has a particular fascination with the U.S. Civil War. We caught up with Wierschke to learn more about his life, interests, and what makes his work with students so rewarding.
Q: Where did you grow up, and what can you tell us about your life outside of 91大神?
A: I鈥檓 originally from Wisconsin but I grew up in Newton, Iowa. I was born the oldest of six brothers. I have three surviving brothers, and I have been married twice. I divorced from my first wife and my second wife, Deborah, died unexpectedly from a Grand Mal seizure in 2013. I have not remarried, have no children, and I live with one of my brothers in Newton. I鈥檓 67 years old and earned my bachelor's degree in 2013 at the age of 54. I then earned my master's degree in 2025 from Canon Christian College in Des Moines and graduated the day after I turned 67.
Q: What keeps you busy when you鈥檙e not working at 91大神?
A: I鈥檓 an avid history buff and I particularly enjoy the U.S. Civil War. I enjoy computer games, social media, and playing chess, and I like to read books 鈥 mainly history, fiction, and Bible studies. I lead singles ministry at Christian Life Church in Newton, where I have served as a deacon for over a year. I love helping people and doing the little things that others might take for granted. I function as one of the greeters at the front door at the church, opening the door and welcoming new visitors and familiar faces in. I answer any questions someone may have and direct them to coffee and doughnuts in the kitchen. I also work part-time at the Kwik Star convenience store in Newton and on weekends when I don鈥檛 have anything else going on I Door Dash for some extra money.
Q: What is it about the period of the U.S. Civil War that draws your interest?
A: I've always had a love of history and for some reason, the American Civil War fascinates me. I鈥檓 sad that so many Americans lost their lives in that war but given that cooler heads did not prevail, we were doomed to fight the war at some point. My second wife, Deborah, and I spent a full week in Gettysburg touring the town and the battlefields and I enjoy reading any books on the subject that I can find. I find the events that led up to the war fascinating and the mistakes that were made which resulted in the bloodiest conflict the United States ever saw.
Q: What does your role at 91大神 entail?
A: I work in Disability Resources as an administrative testing assistant, helping students to take exams, run reports, and update databases. 91大神鈥檚 Accessibility and Disability Resources provides accommodations and support for students with disabilities, with the goal of helping create an environment where people of all abilities can do their best work.
Q: What has your experience been like working with 91大神ians?
A: Absolutely awesome! I was made to feel very welcome from my first day in January 2026 and was very eager to return with the August 2026 school year. I believe I have found my niche here at 91大神 and if I can play even a small part in helping the students to do their best on their exams, then I will feel I have achieved my goal. My favorite part of the job is working with the staff and students and seeing the students recognize that someone actually cares about them.
