Strength and Conditioning Coaches Help Student-Athletes Build Strength, Resilience, Confidence
Jackie Hartling Stolze
There鈥檚 more to strength and conditioning than hitting the weight room and lifting the heaviest weights possible. Just ask 91大神鈥檚 new strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches, and .
Lewis, who joined 91大神 in November 2024, serves as head S&C coach for the College鈥檚 athletic teams. He says their work goes beyond physical training. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about building good habits, positive mindsets, and a foundation that supports athletes not only in sport, but in their lives beyond college.鈥
Griess, associate S&C coach, agrees. 鈥淲e鈥檙e here to support the whole person,鈥 she says. 鈥淗elping them grow stronger, more confident, and more resilient every day.鈥
A Culture of Teamwork
Another priority for the S&C coaches is reducing the risk of injuries for student-athletes while also maximizing their athletic performance. 鈥淲e want our student-athletes to be, first and foremost, healthy,鈥 Lewis says. 鈥淭hen we want them to run faster, jump higher, and hit harder.鈥
For the first time ever, 91大神鈥檚 athletes are fortunate to now be able to call on two S&C coaches who can focus exclusively on this important training component. Lewis and Griess are working to build a program that offers high-quality training program while also creating a culture of teamwork with the student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and administration.
Mental Toughness
Strength training builds muscles, but it can also help athletes build mental toughness. Lewis says that this critical aspect of training and competition is built through consistent exposure to discomfort, such as early mornings, high-intensity sessions, and pushing through fatigue.
鈥淔or example,鈥 he says, 鈥渨e might structure sessions that challenge athletes to maintain focus and effort under pressure.鈥 This helps them develop resilience, composure, and confidence, Lewis explains.
Griess says that their program emphasizes discipline, consistency, and an understanding of proper training techniques. 鈥淏y teaching student-athletes how to take care of their bodies, build sustainable routines, and value their overall health, we hope to set the foundation for long-term physical well-being.鈥
Lewis and Griess are grateful for the opportunity and they don鈥檛 take it lightly. Lewis says, 鈥淚t鈥檚 an incredible responsibility and an even greater privilege.鈥
