Eric L. McIntyre
Eric McIntyre maintains careers as a conductor, composer, instrumental performer, and educator. At 91大神 he teaches music composition courses and directs the 91大神 Symphony Orchestra. He has contributed to 91大神's Liberal Arts in Prison Program, for which he presented lectures, taught credit-bearing courses, and conducted several performances of the 91大神 Symphony at Newton Correctional Facility.
McIntyre also currently serves as Concert Presenter for the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and host of the DMSO Remix podcast.
He is Music Director of the Central Iowa Symphony in Ames, IA, and is past positions include Music Director of the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Ottumwa Symphony, and the new music ensemble AURA, and he served as the leader of the brass program for the Swakopmund Musikwoche festival in Swakopmund, Namibia.
McIntyre's original compositions have been performed around the world by a wide array of performers and received support and awards from ASCAP, the Iowa Arts Council, the American Music Center, the U.S. National Park Sevice, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Equally adept as a hornist, McIntyre was a member of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras and has performed as an orchestral hornist with the Houston Symphony, Des Moines Symphony and Orchestra Iowa. In addition to his work as an orchestral hornist, he continues to perform in solo and chamber music settings and as an avant-garde performance artist on horn as well as on a variety of instruments of his own creation, including those made from gourds, found objects, and parts of antique horns.
He received B.M. and M.M. degrees in music performance at Indiana University where he was also awarded the prestigious Performer鈥檚 Certificate. He then attended the European Mozart Foundation academy in Krak贸w, Poland and later earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music composition from the University of Houston Moores School of Music.
Beyond his activities as a scholar and musician, McIntyre is a small-scale farmer and amateur butcher. He has raised turkeys, goats, sheep, and hogs on his farms outside 91大神, IA, but nowadays his primary occupation includes exploring his native prairie lands on his vintage 1961 Deere 3010 tractor.
