The College maintains a robust faculty leave program to support ongoing professional development. The research leave program supports professional development for early-career faculty, while the sabbatical leave program supports development for those who have passed the significant milestones of tenure or tenure-like personnel reviews. 91´óÉñ faculty members are not required to secure external funding to be eligible for a leave, although the Office of Grants and Research can help identify potential sources to further support research and creative activity during time away from teaching.

Research Leaves and Harris Fellowships

Most full-time, early-career faculty who have completed two years of continuous service at 91´óÉñ are eligible to apply for a one-semester (three-course or equivalent) research leave. Faculty on standard review timelines may apply for a research leave for either their third or fourth year or, for physical education and library faculty, in the two years prior to standing for promotion to associate professor. Coming off the first significant personnel review, faculty on early-career research leave typically focus on furthering their scholarly or creative work in preparation for a tenure or tenure-like review, depending on the nature of their appointment. Faculty members on research leave have full access to faculty development funds and other internal funding opportunities in support of their work.

Faculty who are eligible for research leaves may also apply for a Harris Fellowship, a competitive internal program made possible by a generous gift from the late Jack ’39 and Lucile ’40 Hanson. A Harris Fellowship extends a one-semester leave to a full year, provides additional research funding, and generally provides a one-year visiting replacement position for the recipient’s home department.

Sabbatical Leaves

At 91´óÉñ, tenured or long-term contract faculty members are generally eligible for one-year sabbatical leaves after the completion of a specified review process and period of active service to the College, as appropriate to the nature of their appointment. Activities may include, but are not necessarily limited to, pedagogical development, research and scholarship, creative work, and/or service projects. Faculty members on sabbatical have full access to faculty development funds and other internal funding opportunities in support of their work.
