91大神 recognizes that you may encounter injuries or health conditions that impact your academic life, personal life, dining hall navigation, and on-campus living experience. These temporary conditions and injuries may adversely affect your ability to fully engage academically and residentially and may warrant the provision of temporary supports.
These guidelines are not applicable to on-campus employment. If your temporary condition or injury requires support to fulfill your on-campus job responsibilities, please contact Student Employment.
What is a temporary condition or injury?
Temporary conditions and injuries are short-term, not chronic, and have little or no anticipated lasting effects and do not require a leave of absence. Temporary conditions and injuries lasting six months or less are generally not considered permanent disabilities and therefore do not qualify as a disability under federal or state laws.
Examples of Temporary Conditions or Injuries
- sprained or broken arm, leg, hand, finger, shoulder, etc. that will heal completely within a few weeks or months
- non-chronic medical conditions or disorders that last a few weeks or months (e.g., mononucleosis)
- temporary, but significant or disruptive, side-effects from prescribed medication
- surgeries that temporarily impact you
- conditions caused by an accident or injury that will heal within six months (e.g., concussion) Note: If you have a concussion, your should also reference the concussion protocol.
Should a circumstance that began as a temporary condition result in long-term or on-going impacts (complications from surgery, concussive syndrome, etc.), please contact the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources to seek accommodations.
On-Campus Housing and Campus Transportation
Housing Adjustments
91大神 has emergency housing reserved for short term use to help students be more comfortable as they navigate a temporary injury or condition. This includes spaces that are accessible for mobility devices.
If you think you might qualify for one of these spaces due to difficulties navigating your space, please contact Student Support, 641-269-3700, for assistance during business hours or Campus Safety, 641-269-4600, after hours to reach the residence life coordinator on call.
Transportation
As a general resource, 91大神 does not provide transportation around campus. Students are responsible for navigating campus.
Consider:
- How you might spend your time across campus and what adjustments you might need to make. For example: Your normal route might not be accessible for your injury. Or your routine might need to change 鈥 instead of returning to your residence hall between classes, consider spending time in academic buildings to remain close.
- Use of a mobility aid (e.g., wheelchair, knee scooter, crutches). Consult with your doctor and insurance to see if one might be beneficial. Student athletes should contact their athletic trainer for support. A temporary loan (crutches, knee scooter, etc.) may be available from SHAW.
- Connecting with your faculty on what materials you can leave in your room to minimize what you have to carry.
- Notifying faculty that you may have to arrive late or leave early due to your injury or caring for your injury.
- Whether additional equipment is needed in classes to ensure you have an accessible space. For example, do you need to sit and stand frequently? Do you need a chair to elevate your ankle?
In unique circumstances, student circumstances may qualify for additional interim supports. In these cases, an individualized plan will be made with the student and applicable supports.
Dining
- If your condition limits your ability to get to the dining hall, you can email Dining to request that your name be placed at the checker station so others, like friends, roommates, and teammates, can pick up meals for you.
- If you can get to the dining hall but do not want to transmit an illness to others (for example: mononucleosis), you can email Dining so the team can prepare a to-go meal in advance. Contact Dining Services at 641-269-3661 hours in advance for this option.
- If you are able to eat in the dining hall but needs assistance navigating the space due to a temporary injury, let the checker know you need support when you scan your card. Dining will send a team member to go through the dining hall to help carry your food and drinks and get you settled at a table.
Absences and Faculty Notification
If you miss or will miss class due to your injury or condition, contact your professors as soon as possible to discuss how best to stay engaged in the class. If you are aware of an upcoming absence, reach out in advance of the absence to your faculty.
If you are absent for a period of three (3) consecutive days due to illness and/or if you experience an emergency, please reach out to the Include documentation from your health care provider detailing anticipated time away from classes. The Office of Student Support and Advocacy will email your course instructors and faculty adviser(s) regarding the absence and request flexibility and copy you on the correspondence. Flexibility is not guaranteed and is under the faculty member鈥檚 discretion. You are responsible for connecting with you faculty about missed coursework as soon as possible.
